Nome Elementary School Principal Nicholas Settle announced his resignation during Tuesday’s Board of Education meeting, citing personal challenges.
“It is with a heavy heart that I say it. It is not a choice I make lightly,” Settle told the board. “I have spent the past several years making Nome my home and getting to know the community. If I had my druthers I wouldn’t be going anywhere, but reality is here.”
Settle explained that family medical issues and concerns about immigration enforcement were key factors in his decision. As a Hispanic man with children of Hispanic heritage, he said he fears for the possibility of his children being deported.
“I need to be within a minimum of 20 to 24 hours of reaching a port of deport in case that happens,” Settle said. “Unfortunately, that will be calling me away.”
Board President Darlene Trigg commended Settle for his leadership and dedication.
“Nick, I just wanted to say, I wish I was there in person to thank you for all that you’ve done and the stability that you’ve offered and what you’ve brought to the elementary school,” Trigg said. “It’s been amazing for you to continue some of the things that KJ started and the other things that you’ve really worked on with the district. It’s sad to see you go, but understandable. Thank you so much.”
Settle shared that despite his personal challenges, he remains committed to supporting the school through the effective date of his resignation of June 30. He intends on breaking the news to students after testing season has concluded.
The Board of Education has not yet announced plans for hiring his replacement.
