KNOM Community Calendar: Jan 13

Here’s what's coming up this week on the KNOM Community Calendar:

The Nome Common Council is set to meet at City Hall to review a few interesting items. They’ll first enter a work session at 5:30 to review zoning changes to downtown Nome.

An agreement between the Nome Winter Sports Association and the city are also expected, which outlines responsibilities each party will maintain for the new ice rink located next to the Nome Recreation Center.

Six properties in Nome are also expected to be declared fire hazards, health hazards, or public nuisances and are subject to demolition by July 1 if not remedied.

Tuesday night the Nome Public Schools Board of Education is set to meet at Nome Elementary School at 5:30 p.m. There, we’re expecting a presentation on a first draft of the district’s FY 26 budget.

Some items of note include slashing Nome-Beltz’s student travel budget in half, from $120,000 to $60,000 and the elimination of 10 teaching positions at the district’s two main campuses. The changes represent a reduction in nearly $1.2 million. This comes in light of teachers in the district still working without a new union contract since the school year began.

Happening now through February 2 there’s a dog food and straw drive in support of the 100th anniversary of the 1925 Serum Run. Drop off sealed dog food or straw at Nome Animal House, Rural Alaska Animal Resources, or Terry’s Pet Food Pantry. You can also purchase bags directly from one of the aforementioned vendors.

All donations will be split up to regional villages to help dogs in need. There’s also a planning meeting for the Serum Run Thursday at noon on Zoom.

On Friday, Kawerak has a deadline to apply for travel scholarships to go to an upcoming meeting on chum bycatch. The scholarships are available for regional tribal members interested in delivering in-person testimony at the North Pacific Fishery Management Council meeting in Anchorage next month.

Thank you to everybody that submitted events. If we missed something, head to knom.org/calendar. There you can view and submit events at any time.
