Snow finally in the forecast for Nome

Snow is back in the forecast, according to the National Weather Service (NWS). Two fronts starting Friday and Saturday are expected to bring snow and high winds.

According to a NWS briefing issued Thursday afternoon, Nome is forecast to receive between 10 and 14 inches of snow, with the majority coming with the second front Saturday night through Sunday. Wind gusts of up to 29 mph are also forecast.

A Winter Weather Advisory has been issued for St. Lawrence Island and Diomede, where wind gusts as high as 63 mph are expected. Snow is forecast as well, although less than expected for communities on the mainland.

The round of snow comes as Nome has experienced unusually low snow accumulations and record high December temperatures. For more insight into the unusual winter weather, check out our conversation with Climate Specialist, Rick Thoman.
