Nanook Sports Minute: Dec 10

Over the weekend the Nome-Beltz Nanooks headed to Anchorage for the Grace Grizzly Shakedown tournament. The team's coach, Corey Erikson, described the performance as "gallant" after the Nanooks earned top finishes amongst the 27 teams in attendance.

Lacey Sherman made it all the way to the championship match but fell to tough competition from South Anchorage High School. Her teammate, Renee Brown, also made it to the championship match but fell short of the title. They both finished second in their respective weight classes.

Over on the boy’s side, Young Erikson fought hard in the semifinals but fell short of the championship match. He finished 3rd overall in his weight class. The team’s senior standout, Wyatt Ahmasuk, picked up an injury in the tournament and placed 6th.

Their performance at the Grace Grizzly Shakedown earned the team 13th overall and placed in the top five for 3A teams.

The team will head to Kotzebue this weekend for the regional tournament. While we unfortunately won’t be there, we’ll bring you results as they come in through our social media channels.
