Two Nanooks named student of the month

Two students in Nome were recognized at Tuesday night’s Nome Public Schools Board of Education meeting.

Tegan Oleson, a sixth grader at Nome-Beltz, was awarded the Student of the Month by Principal Teriscovkya Smith.

“You represent all that we hope to see in our Nanooks as they grow up,” Principal Smith began her remarks.

Principal Smith then shared stories from a selection of Oleson's teachers.

“This is from Mr. Horton, that you are a source of constant joy and sunlight in his class, he has yet to see you have a frown on your face or a negative thing to say to anyone. Instead, you find the positive in every activity and every situation and every opportunity that comes your way,” she said.

Then, Principal Smith invited Oleson to share some advice.

“What is your advice to other students on how to be successful?” Principal Smith asked.

“Try your hardest and always smile,” Oleson responded.

“Boom. Nailed it, kiddo,” Principal Smith replied.

Next, Principal Smith called on Nome Beltz High School junior Kaya Kent.

“You emanate everything that we look for. There have been days at school where I know that students are facing challenges, and there you are walking down the hall saying hi to everyone with your chin up and your perspective is glass half full,” Principal Smith said.

She then shared a story from History Teacher Mary Ulroan.

“Ms. Ulroan says you're very responsible and you're an independent student. You consistently do your work thoroughly and with great attention, and you're always aiming for a deep understanding of the material,” she shared. “You're diligent in your preparation for tests, regularly reviewing notes and asking thoughtful questions to ensure that you're fully prepared.”

Both students received a commemorative certificate and a gift card to ACs.
