Kougarok Road Repairs Underway Following $2M Award to Tumet Industries

Repairs to Kougarok Road are set to begin following the award of a $2.07 million contract to Tumet Industries, LLC. The Nome-based company was awarded the contract by the Alaska Department of Transportation (DOT) on July 9. Work is scheduled for completion by the end of September 2025.

The project will focus on repairing segments of the road at mileposts 61.5, 66.5, and 79.5.

Tumet Industries has been tasked with permanent repairs, including culvert replacements and roadbed stabilization to improve safety and accessibility for residents and transporters in the region. These improvements are seen as critical for ensuring the long-term usability of the road.

According to the DOT, Tumet Industries received the Notice to Proceed (NTP) on July 31. Initial setup for the project is already underway. Tumet is currently awaiting the arrival of multi-plate culverts, expected to be delivered by early September.

Class II riprap, large loose stones commonly used for foundations, will be tested at the DOT’s Nome headquarters before being transported by a subcontractor to a staging area at milepost 80.

While this season’s work will focus primarily on MP 61.5 and MP 66.5, further work at MP 79.5 is expected to begin once the culverts and other materials are on-site. According to DOT, work at these locations will likely start in early September and will take only two to three days to complete.

The project is expected to continue into the 2025 construction season, with full completion targeted for September 30, 2025.
