Every year, we celebrate St. Teresa of Calcutta’s feast day on September 5, the anniversary of her death.
Mother Teresa was born in 1910 in a small town called Skopje. She always wanted to help others, so when she grew up, she became a nun and was sent to Calcutta, India where she became a teacher. While she loved teaching, she couldn’t ignore the many people she saw living in the streets, hungry and sick. She knew she had to help them.
She left her job as a teacher, helping anyone she could. Soon, others joined her, and they formed a group called the Missionaries of Charity. Together, they opened homes for the sick, cared for children without parents, and fed the hungry.
In 1979, Mother Teresa won the Nobel Peace Prize for her work helping the poor. Even though she became famous, she always stayed humble and focused on helping others.
Mother Teresa’s life teaches us that even small acts of kindness can make a big difference. She showed the world that caring for others is one of the most important things we can do.
KNOM continues to bring small acts of kindness daily to remote Western Alaska thanks to your generosity. KNOM feels blessed every day by your kindness, and most importantly, your friendship. If you have any prayer intentions, or if you would like to simply say hello, we would love to hear from you!
