‘Mix of ingredients’ caused record smoke covering Nome and region on July 1

Parts of Western Alaska and Nome were blanketed in smoke, reducing air quality to hazardous levels. The wildfires that caused smoky conditions for up to 15 hours that day were burning more than 400 miles south of Nome.
