This year, KNOM will ring in Christmas Day with the old and the new! Due to staff shortages, the traditional volunteer-led project of writing an original Christmas play was canceled. However, in a moment of clarity, KNOM volunteers knew that they had to step in and save the play.
Les Brown dreamed up KNOM’s first Christmas offering for this year: a retelling of “The Gift of the Magi”. The classic tale is about a couple who each sacrifice their dearest treasure to buy each other a gift on Christmas. Their gestures ultimately fall flat, but through their love for each other the two discover the true wisdom of the Magi.
“The Gift of the Magi” is a radio classic, brought back to life with voices inside and outside the radio mission and music handpicked by Les. A cameo by his wife, Paula Brown, was a particularly special Christmas gift.
The second radio play is an original story by volunteer Miriam Trujillo. Featuring voices from the station as well as local talent, it’s the story of a lonely little girl named Florence who is invited by Father Christmas to visit the North Pole on Christmas Eve — if only she can figure out how to get there in time. Through a series of adventures and misadventures, little Florence learns the value of keeping the Christmas spirit alive in her heart all year long.
After the theatrical premiere on Christmas Day, you can listen to the plays on this website.
