Kawerak, the tribal nonprofit that serves the Norton Sound region, has paid for foster parents’ internet access for the months of April and May.
An employee noticed foster families were financially stressed with schools being closed. Traci McGarry, Child and Family Services Program Director, says access to internet, an expensive utility, can really benefit foster families.
“For some folks, that means that they are getting internet in their home – maybe for the first time,” she said in an interview. “We’re hoping that kids are able to get their schoolwork done on there. Hopefully it’ll take a little bit of burden off of them for the next month or so.”
