The Nome-Beltz High School varsity girls’ volleyball team started the season strong this weekend, with a pair of wins at home against Juneau-Douglas.

In Friday’s match, the Lady Nanooks won three games to the Crimson Bears’ one. On Saturday, the match lasted for five games, with the Lady Nanooks taking three and the Crimson Bears taking two.

Last year, the 4A Juneau-Douglas team beat the 3A Nome team in late September at a match in Juneau. The Crimson Bears ran away with the Southeastern conference in 2016, finishing with a 9-3 conference record, but lost quickly in the state tournament against Wasilla and Colony.

The Lady Nanooks look to improve on their performance this year after finishing last in the Western conference in 2016 with a 2-6 conference record. At the Western conference tournament in Barrow last October, the Nanooks were forced out by Kotzebue, the 2016 conference champion.

This weekend’s wins place Nome at the top of the conference standings, along with Barrow. Both teams have two wins so far, although Nome has not yet faced a conference opponent.

The Nanooks play next on September 8 at the Dimond Tourney in Anchorage.
