Yesterday afternoon, Nome’s new Superior Court judge was officially sworn in by Chief Justice Craig Stowers of the Alaska Supreme Court.
During Romano DiBenedetto’s oath of office at the Nome courthouse, Stowers acknowledged that the last couple of years have been difficult for Nome and thanked the court staff for its hard work during that time.
Stowers reminded the full room of community members that a judge is the personal embodiment of justice and cited Socrates when listing qualities of a judge.
Those qualities include moral courage, wisdom, humility, and an understanding heart, which Stowers says DiBenedetto has. After Stower’s opening remarks, judge Paul Roetman from Kotzebue had the honor of robing DiBenedetto. As this part of the ceremony was ending, Roetman said Nome is getting “the hardest working judge in Fairbanks.”
Newly sworn-in Superior Court judge DiBenedetto then spoke directly to the crowd as he stated that his number one priority will be getting to know the community he serves throughout his tenure in Nome.
