Elder Voices: Maggie Olson

Houses on the Hillside in Golovin
Houses on the Hillside in Golovin

Maggie Olson was born in 1926 in Golovin and was raised in Solomon with her grandparents. Maggie shares stories of gathering berries and greens with her grandmother and memories of her Uncle Pete subsisting, seining for fish, gathering tom cod, and whaling for beluga.

She got married to Martin Olson in 1952. They moved to Nome for a few years, and eventually to Golovin, where they chose to raise their children in a village, like they were raised.

Hear more from Maggie on this week’s episode of Elder Voices from the KNOM Archive, at 11am Wednesday, and again at 6pm. Elder Voices: a window to the past, a door to the future.
