Coinciding with the end of the 2017 Iditarod, high school basketball seasons were coming to an end at the State championships in Anchorage this weekend.
Scammon Bay and Selawik basketball teams played for the girls 1A State championship, while the Gambell boys team faced off with Ninilchik, the defending 1A champs.
Led by senior Kiah Charlie, the Scammon Bay Eagles finished out a perfect season on top of clinching the championship. Charlie scored 22 of the team’s 71 points. For the Selawik Wolves, Shaylynn Hingsbergen was their lead scorer with 13 points.
With this victory, the Eagles have won back-to-back State championships.
In the boy’s bracket, the Gambell King Polar Bears were pitted against the Ninilchik Wolverines. Gambell as a team struggled to score and only put up 39 on the board; however, Wallace Ungwiluk had 25 of those points.
Ninilchik continued their reign as champs with a 79-39 win.
Later this week in Anchorage, the Nome-Beltz cheer team will participate in the 2017 ASAA State Cheer Competition. The Nanooks will compete with Kodiak, Juneau, and Petersburg in the co-ed division starting Wednesday night.
