Shishmaref elder Davis Sockpick shares from a 2011 interview on Elder Voices this week. Born in 1940, Davis remembers subsisting with his family and doing everything by hand.

Davis remembers being taught how to carve, how to hunt, and how to raise a dog team from the elders in his community and through the guidance of his father. He recalls a time when he could rely on his team of dogs for just about anything. Hear his full interview here.

And tune in every Wednesday at 11am and again at 6pm for another story from a western Alaskan elder. We are KNOM, yours for the stories of western Alaska’s elders.
