Nome’s Common Council could pass an ordinance Monday night requiring all candidates for elected and appointed office to have no undisputed financial debts to the City. If the ordinance is approved, a city voter who has been a resident for at least a year may not owe any undisputed payments in property tax, sales tax, or other financial obligations to the city in order to run for city office.
Before that happens during the regular meeting at 7:00pm, a work session will be held to discuss a potential low income housing project in Nome. Bering Straits Regional Housing Authority, Kawerak, NEST, and the Nome Eskimo Community have requested that the City donate eight lots of land for a Low-Income Housing Tax Credit (LIHTC) project.
Also tonight, Mayor Richard Beneville is expected to appoint Raeshawndra C. Jett or Jessica Farley to the vacant planning commission seat before adjourning the meeting. The Nome City Council work session starts at 6pm tonight, with the regular City Council meeting to follow at 7pm.
