The Aniak Traditional Council will be getting money to assist with home heating bills this winter.
The Fiscal Year 2017 funding comes from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program, or LIHEAP. The Department will be providing more than $15 million to the State and Alaska Native tribes and associations.
The Aniak Traditional Council will receive $149,992. They are one of thirteen Alaska Native tribes and associations set to obtain additional funds totalling $6,515,817.
In a press release on Tuesday, Senator Lisa Murkowski welcomed the announcement from the Department. She emphasized the importance of this money to provide relief for communities around the state with winter approaching, as many Alaskans prepare for high heating bills.
Along with tribes, the State of Alaska will receive $9,151,603 from the LIHEAP Grant, which will be shared with Alaskans through the DHHS Division of Public Assistance.
