[Zetta] Killed the [NexGen] Star

Recently, the volunteers celebrated our three-month Nome-iversary. And we had a lot to celebrate. We’ve spent the last three months learning the layout of the building, the niceties of the editing software, the buttons, the wires, the coffee maker. Eventually, we mastered it all.

And then we had to learn it all over again.

That’s because we came to KNOM at a time of change and transition. KNOM is switching over to the brand spanking new Tom and Florence Busch Digital Studios. That means we had to learn new hardware and new broadcast software (our old system NexGen has been replaced by Zetta). Along the way, there have been mistakes and moments of confusion and plenty of accidental dead air.

But what’s stayed consistent is our commitment to making the best radio that we can make for our dedicated listeners in Western Alaska. And the coffee maker. The coffee maker hasn’t changed. Yet.

Listen to this week’s audio blog to hear all four of us talk about the challenges and the victories that result from a major switch in technology, and to hear me publicly apologize to Madonna.

And if you’re in Nome this Saturday, October 1st, then we welcome you to join us for the dedication of our new studios. There will be tours from noon to 2 pm, with the dedication beginning at 2pm and Mass directly afterward.
