Alaska’s Primary election day won’t happen until Tuesday, August 16th, but the four election regions in the state have been preparing all week.
Nome is covered by the Region 4 elections office along with the rest of districts 37 through 40. Angelique Horton is the Region 4 Elections Supervisor, which stretches from Kaktovik to Dillingham and then to the Aleutians to include a total of 106 precincts.
Out of those 106 precincts, Horton says 97 of them are calling her office on election day with their ballot counts rather than using the digital results from optical scan ballots.
Because of the physical size of region 4, most of the election’s day process is done via long distance methods, such as mailing supplies and ballots or taking phone calls. This year’s primary election is Horton’s first time as elections supervisor since the ’90s, and she suspects it will be a busy one.
Horton estimates the final voting results from Region 4 will not be available until two or three in the morning on Wednesday, August 17th.
