Search and Rescue Underway for Missing Nome Resident

A search and rescue is still underway for Nome resident Joseph Balderas.

Alaska State Troopers received a report of a missing person at 9:30 am Monday morning when the 36-year-old did not arrive to work. The Nome Fire Department reports he has been missing since Sunday.

Balderas’ vehicle was located at mile 44 of the Nome-Council Highway, where it’s presumed he was hiking and running, but troopers could not locate him in the immediate area.

On Monday, a Trooper super cub aircraft responded, in addition to a chartered private helicopter with Nome Search & Rescue spotters.

Nome Volunteer Fire Department/Search & Rescue also responded with ATVs. A U.S. Coast Guard helicopter on a training mission in Kotzebue was also redirected to assist.

Members of the community of Nome are aiding in the search today. If you have any information on his whereabouts, contact the Nome Fire Department at (907) 443-2310.
