A search and rescue is still underway for Nome resident Joseph Balderas.
Alaska State Troopers received a report of a missing person at 9:30 am Monday morning when the 36-year-old did not arrive to work. The Nome Fire Department reports he has been missing since Sunday.
Balderas’ vehicle was located at mile 44 of the Nome-Council Highway, where it’s presumed he was hiking and running, but troopers could not locate him in the immediate area.
On Monday, a Trooper super cub aircraft responded, in addition to a chartered private helicopter with Nome Search & Rescue spotters.
Nome Volunteer Fire Department/Search & Rescue also responded with ATVs. A U.S. Coast Guard helicopter on a training mission in Kotzebue was also redirected to assist.
