Nome Public Schools Adopts $15.2 Million Budget for 2017

NOME, Alaska — The Board of Education for Nome Public Schools has passed a $15.2 million budget for the 2017 fiscal year. At a special meeting Tuesday night, the school board unanimously approved the district’s financial plan, which does not dip into fund balance or make cuts to staff.

The new budget is about $600,000 less than this year’s budget. The district cut back on expenses like supplies, staff travel, and textbooks.

The school board will present the budget to the Nome City Council at a meeting next month. Superintendent Shawn Arnold said he expects the City of Nome to contribute a little more than $2 million to the district. That’s the same amount as this year and nearly 14 percent of Nome Public Schools’ budget.

At last night’s meeting, Arnold also announced that he has accepted a contract extension. He will act as superintendent through June of 2019. The school board will hold its next meeting on April 26.
