Troopers Investigate Burglary at Kotlik Head Start Building

Troopers and VPOs are investigating a burglary at the Kotlik Head Start building. Alaska State Troopers were notified of the break-in shortly after 3 p.m. on Sunday.

“There are some items that were taken from the Head Start building,” said Mark Granda with the trooper post in Emmonak, which responded to the burglary. “Right now, at this point, we don’t have any solid leads or suspects for the burglary. But whoever it is that broke into this place had broken a window out to gain entry into the building.”

With the investigation ongoing, Granda said troopers cannot discuss what items were stolen or how much they were worth.

The Head Start program was already on Christmas break when the burglary occurred, according to Gadina Okitkun, the program’s lead teacher. She said a community member first noticed the broken window and called the building’s maintenance worker, who notified village police officers.

Okitkun said the broken window was repaired on Monday, and the carpet was changed on Tuesday to remove broken glass and make the space safe for students.

Kotlik Head Start will open after the holiday as normal on Jan. 4.

Meanwhile, troopers are asking anyone with information about the burglary to call the Kotlik VPOs or troopers at 949-1300.
