Tourist / Tour Guide

In a strategic use of KNOM volunteer personal days, Jenn and I managed to get a 4 day weekend in Anchorage in early June. After convincing a few other Nome-ites to join, we flew down on a Thursday for a much needed summer vacation.

I love to plan, and I really love to vacation, but sometimes, it’s best to let someone else take the reins. To see someone else’s city through their experience is my favorite way to travel.

This state is incredible, and I have so much left to explore. I am constantly in awe of the people that live here. Have you ever met a boring Alaskan? No matter where I have traveled, whether it be to a village in Western Alaska, to Anchorage or Talkeetna, I am introduced to people who inspire me to live my best and biggest life.

With barely enough time to unpack, we returned from the city to greet my friends from home! Kara flew up from Nicaragua, and Samm came in from New York. We haven’t all been in the same place since May 2014.

I’m always a bit hesitant when I know my worlds are going to collide. I think we’re all slightly different versions of ourselves around different friend groups in new places.

The other night, I sat on the beach while I watched my college friends skip rocks with my Nome friends on the coast of the Bering Sea. How often does anyone get to experience that? I’m grateful for all the friends I’ve made along the way.
