Kotzebue’s John Baker with a gracious finish

Kotzebue’s John Baker pulled into Nome as the sun began to rise to finish his run of the 2014 Iditarod. Placing 19th this year, 2011 champion John Baker said that the trail favored certain teams’ dogs, and his wasn’t one of them. “Our team didn’t do quite as good as I wanted to or expected to, but really, they didn’t do that bad.”

Led under the burled arch by Bounty and Swift, two of the oldest dogs on his team, Baker said he thought they should have the opportunity to lead the way into Nome. Baker’s partner Katherine Keith is running another group of dogs from their kennel in Kotzebue. Baker says they’re performing well, and he’s sure many of those dogs will move up and be a good solid core to their #1 team next year.

In 19th place, bib #53 John Baker finished the 2014 Iditarod in  9 days 18 hours 19 minutes and 15 seconds, representing Western Alaska’s Kotzebue.
