In Takotna, a quick stop and a bagged lunch for Nicholas Petit

Two sack lunches and two Cokes – and a small team of eager race observers and Iditarod officials – greeted Nicholas Petit when he arrived in the Takotna checkpoint at 8:28pm last night.

Petit was not the first to arrive in Takotna – Aliy Zirkle, quietly attending to her dogs when Petit pulled in, had arrived sooner – but he was the first to leave the checkpoint, departing after just seven minutes. It was just enough time for Petit to receive a small sampling of Takotna’s legendary hospitality, in the form of soda and food for the trail.
