A missing child and a meandering bear

With the support of caring families throughout the United States, Puerto Rico, and overseas, KNOM contributes to the health and safety of thousands of families spread out over 100,000 square miles of Western Alaska. The power of radio saves and enhances the lives of people throughout the region.

To all members of our KNOM Radio Mission family, we pass on the thanks of the Nome Police Department. Last week, KNOM played a critical role in reuniting a 15-year old boy with his father. The police dispatcher called the station with sincere thanks for KNOM’s announcements and news coverage.

At the same time we were helping with the search for the young boy, the police department, the Alaska Department of Fish and Game, and the Alaska State Troopers were dealing with bear sightings near homes and the high school. A bear was reportedly wounded and very dangerous. KNOM aired constant announcements, news reports, and updates requesting that listeners call authorities with any bear sightings.

Everyone remained safe, and the bear eventually moved north, away from town.
