Oh, the Fourth of July. I have so many wonderful memories of parades and fireworks as a child. My sister and I often visited our grandparents in upstate Pennsylvania on the Fourth of July. I’m not sure if it was the awe of the fireworks, the late-night fresh ice cream or just the fact I was able to stay up past my bedtime that made Independence Day my favorite holiday growing up.
My grandparents had a whole routine for us – bathtime, pajamas (and our pink fuzzy bathrobes and slippers), snuggling into the car eating ice cream from the dairy and watching the beautiful colors light up the sky.
Even to this day, I still look forward to July 4th.
In Nome, it was a bit different. No shorts. No heat and humidity, just chilly temps and wind.

This year, I was able to help KNOM bring the downtown Nome parade to distant communities reporting LIVE on Front Street with Ric in the studio. If I remember nothing else from my time in Nome, it will be celebrating the 4th of July and sharing it with the region. Although just a part of my daily job, I hope that my work helps others make their own memories of Independence Day – ones they can savor just as I do each year.
(Thanks to Lucus for shooting these photos while I was reporting live.)
