This Friday and Saturday, Kawerak and Nome Eskimo Community are holding their annual e-waste event in Nome. Timed to work in conjunction with the City of Nome’s spring cleaning initiative, the event collects old electronics – ranging from computers and iPods to televisions and microwaves – and transports them to Seattle for recycling.
The e-waste drive runs from 11am to 4pm on both Friday and Saturday. Anahma Shannon with Kawerak’s backhaul and recycling program says the cost of recycling e-waste is 25 cents per pound, or a 10 dollar flat fee for bulk drops. She says partnerships with Bering Air and Alaska Logistics are taking care of some of the transportation costs, but the recycling process has other fees that simply can’t be avoided. The e-waste will be palletized and barged down to Seattle this summer.
