Opioids In Western Alaska: An Epidemic of Addiction

Back in September, the community of Nome hosted a panel of professionals who discussed opioid addiction and the epidemic that’s affecting our nation, state, and region.

The panelist forum discussion, and a screening of the documentary Chasing the Dragon, The Life of an Opiate Addict, offered the Nome audience insights into where the drugs are coming from, discussed how painkillers (opioids) can lead people to abuse harder drugs like heroin, and suggested ways for the community to become more involved in solving the problem.

One of the panelists who spoke during that forum was Norton Sound Health Corporation Doctor Shana Theobald. Recently, KNOM’s Davis Hovey and Doctor Theobald discussed the opioid epidemic, the Chasing the Dragon documentary about the life of an opiate addict, and potential help or resources for those struggling with addiction:
