Nanooks Wrestlers Close Season at State; Basketball Opens Season at Home

Nome wrestlers headed to Anchorage for the State Division II and Girls’ Wrestling Tournament Friday and Saturday, while Nome basketball hosted Galena on Thursday and Friday.

The Nome-Beltz Nanooks wrestling team hosted schools from around the region for the Northern Conference Wrestling Tournament over the weekend. The top two wrestlers in each weight class qualified for the 1A/2A/3A State Wrestling Tournament.

The Nome-Beltz wrestling team had a unique learning opportunity this weekend at the Anchorage Christian Schools (ACS) tournament: they got to take on wrestlers from around Alaska they wouldn’t normally get to see.

Nearly 100 student wrestlers from around Western Alaska flew into Nome last weekend for the Nome Wrestling Invite. Athletes from larger teams like Nome, Kotzebue, and Bethel competed along with students from Gambell, Golovin, Savoonga, Shishmaref, St. Michael, and White Mountain.
At State Cross-Country Meet, Making Records And Memories

Twenty-two athletes represented the Bering Strait, Nome and Kotzebue school districts at the 1A/2A/3A State Championships in Anchorage on Saturday. Not only was it great competition, the Nome co-head coach says, the students also made “memories that they’re going to remember.”

Teams from Kotzebue, Teller, White Mountain, and Savoonga visited Nome for the Nome Cross-Country Invite. And the Kotzebue Huskies volleyball team hosted the Nome Nanooks, resulting in a Kotzebue win.
