City Council Discussion on Sex Offenders at Seaside Continues; Final Decision Yet to Be Made
The Council was split three-to-three on an ordinance to change the Nome Code of Ordinances to allow sex offenders who are actively receiving treatment to be housed at Seaside. The tiebreaker vote came to Mayor Richard Beneville, who voted yes in favor of moving the ordinance on to the second reading phase.

During their 5:30pm work session, the Council plans to discuss updating the Nome Code of Ordinances to allow sex offenders who are actively receiving treatment to be housed at permitted correctional facilities in Nome. The Council would have to pass an ordinance, currently in the first reading phase, to make this change.

Nome City Council Approves Fuel Contracts, Project Bids, and New Emergency Services Technician
The City of Nome will pay Crowley $3.37 per gallon for unleaded vehicle fuel and $2.95 for diesel, but Bonanza will provide equipment fuel and heating oil. Also, the City Council approved a resolution to employ Quinten Johnson as the emergency services technician.
Should Sex Offenders Be Housed at Seaside? D.O.C. Commissioner and Others Weigh In
AMCC Superintendent Sandy Martinson says that, on average, between 20 and 40 inmates are housed at Seaside regularly. To fill all 60 beds, the proposed plan is to allow convicted sex offenders to stay at the facility. According to the Chief Mental Health Officer for the D.O.C., Adam Rutherford, currently nine untreated sex offenders reside in the community of Nome.

With new members sworn in, the Nome City Council rezoned multiple blocks of property during Monday’s regular meeting — and refined the City’s definition of “junk motor vehicles” and the fines related to abandoning junked cars in particular zones.

Municipal Election Results Authenticated, New Councilmen Set To Be Sworn In
According to City Clerk Bryant Hammond, there were 661 ballots cast in this year’s election after ruling out questioned ballots. All five Councilmen present for the meeting voted in favor of canvassing the election results. Adam Martinson and Doug Johnson will be sworn in as Councilmen during the next regular meeting on Monday at City Hall.

They also voted in favor of prohibiting the storage of junk motor vehicles in all zoning districts except the industrial one, and implementing fines for any violations.
