Audra Billings named Region I Principal of the Year

Aniguiin School Principal Audra Billings is being recognized for her leadership, commitment to student success and efforts to strengthen relationships throughout her school community.

After five years leading the Aniguiin School in Elim, she said the recognition came as a surprise after one of her teachers nominated her for the award.

“It's an honor,” Billings said. “I've put in a lot of work here in Aniguiin to develop some programs and some ways for our students to succeed, and it's an honor to know that it's been noticed throughout the community and the school.”

AASSP sponsors regional and statewide Principal of the Year awards to recognize educational leaders whose work plays an important role in student success. Nominations may come from students, school staff, parents, district office personnel or fellow principals. Regional winners are selected by AASSP members in their respective regions and become eligible for consideration as Alaska's statewide Principal of the Year.

Billings' nomination reflects the emphasis she has placed on developing relationships and creating a positive school environment during her time at Aniguiin.

Marlon Francis Serina, a math teacher at Aniguiin School, said Billings has made a positive impact on the school's culture.

"She helps share a school climate where teachers feel valued, students feel safe and improvements are noticed," Serina said. "Ms. Billings sets clear vision, building supportive routines and aligning school practices to student success."

Since arriving at Aniguiin, Billings said she has worked to address behavioral challenges while building trust.

She said establishing positive relationships has been essential to helping students feel supported while also understanding that expectations for their success remain high.

"Relationships mean a lot to these students here in our village, as well as the parents that have these kids here," Billings said. "Relationships, is the key."

Billings said her approach to leadership centers on creating a healthy school environment where everyone feels seen and heard, including students, staff and parents. She credits much of the trust she has developed with students and families to being genuine and consistent in her role.

"I'm myself every day that I walk in that door, and the kids know I'm myself. I'm true to myself, and I'm true to them," she said.

The 2027 AASSP Regional Principals of the Year will be recognized at the 60th Annual Alaska Principals' Conference in Anchorage on January 22, 2027.
