This summer, Catholics in Western Alaska marked the end of an era. Jesuit missionaries have been proclaiming the Gospel in Alaska ever since they first set foot on the shores of the Yukon River in 1887. Jesuit missionaries established practically every parish in rural Alaska, and KNOM is the fruit of the labor of Jesuit missionaries and volunteers. This summer, due to aging priests and diminishing vocations, the remaining Jesuit priests bade Alaska farewell.
This, precisely as KNOM celebrated 55 years of serving Western Alaska. The Jesuits’ departure underscores just how essential KNOM’s mission is: now Catholics in Western Alaska will depend even more on KNOM’s weekly broadcast of Sunday Mass and daily doses of spiritual nourishment.
