Exclusive housing development nears completion in Nome

A 27-person housing project owned by Bering Straits Native Corporation (BSNC) subsidiary Alaska Gold Company is preparing to move to its final location. The facility will comprise of several modular housing units, with the goal of housing BSNC employees working on a myriad of projects operated by the regional native corporation and its subsidiaries.

BSNC held a town hall at Nome’s Old St. Joe’s Church last week, where its Vice President of Nome Operations, Larry Pederson, fielded questions from the community about the project.

Residents asked who BSNC would be prioritizing for housing at the site. Pederson said BSNC’s hiring policy — which prioritizes shareholders, followed by descendants and then spouses — would also apply to the housing.

The facility will feature 15 rooms with a communal kitchen, dining area and bathroom.

Alaska Gold Company will need a conditional use permit to place the units on the BSNC-owned land, according to BSNC’s Director of External Affairs and Public Relations, Marleanna Hall.

The modular housing units will be moved to its new permanent location on the corner of 6th Avenue and Steadman Street. Pederson said at the town hall that the move was scheduled for late spring 2026, with residents moving in shortly after.
