What’s the construction at Crowley’s gas pumps?

Heading north from Nome on the Nome-Teller Highway, drivers may notice the Crowley fuel service station in a state of construction. Workers are unearthing giant underground fuel tanks on the corner of the Alaska Commercial Company parking lot.

Crowley’s Vice President of Sales and Supply, Walt Tague, said it was time for the tanks to be replaced. He said the tanks were installed in 1996, and near the end of their 30-year lifespan. The renovation will install new, above-ground tanks, which should allow for easier maintenance and repairs.

The upgrade also includes repairs to the pumps and islands they sit on. Tague said Crowley’s main goal is to mitigate spills as part of its lease agreement with the property owner, AC. Customers should not expect any major changes once they’re back up and running.

Tague said unfortunately the best time to do the work is the worst time for its customers, with summer subsistence season in full-swing. He said Crowley hoped to be back online as soon as possible.

Tague couldn’t confirm Crowley’s price per gallon for Nome this year. With tariffs factoring in, Tague said fuel prices have been volatile.

Crowley expects its final fuel delivery in Nome towards the end of September. Once the fuel reaches land, Tague said Crowley will finalize its price at the pump.
