In Alaska, the Winter Solstice is a unique and important time of year. It happens on December 21st, marking the shortest day and longest night of the year. Because Alaska is so far north, the effects of the solstice are very noticeable.
For Christians, the Winter Solstice is important because it is close to Christmas. Christmas is when Christians remember the birth of Jesus Christ, who is called the “Light of the World.” Just like the Solstice brings back more sunlight, Jesus brings hope and light to the world. In this way, the Solstice and Christmas share a message about light overcoming darkness.
