We hope you had a great Thanksgiving with your loved ones. We hope you’re feeling rested, because there’s a lot going on this week, starting with two local commission meetings.
Monday night the Public Safety Advisory Commission is back for their first meeting since June. There we’re expecting Chief of Police William Crockett to provide an update on NPD’s accreditation process as well as an overview of the force’s activities from July to October. That’s tonight at 6:00 p.m. at City Hall.
The Nome Planning Commission is also meeting at City Hall Tuesday night at 7:00 p.m. We’re expecting updates on a number of ongoing zoning issues.
Just before that the Nome Public Schools Board of Education has called a special session to solicit candidates for a vacant seat on the board. All interested candidates must attend the meeting at the Nome Elementary School library at 5:30 p.m.
Wednesday night the City of Nome is hosting the Christmas Extravaganza at Old St Joes. Stop by for live Christmas music and a special visit by Santa Claus himself. You can take a family photo with Santa and pick up a copy Thursday at the XYZ Senior Center, all for free.
Can’t make it to the Christmas Extravaganza? We’ve partnered with the City of Nome to bring you a livestream that’ll be on our Facebook and YouTube pages. Either online or in-person, we’ll see you at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday.
Thursday there will be a Strait Science featuring the results of NOAA’s 2024 Eastern Bering Sea Bottom Trawl survey. That starts on Zoom at 5:30 p.m.
Also Thursday night stop by Nome-Beltz to make Christmas Cupcakes with Angela Hansen. Learn decorating tips and tricks at this session for all skill levels. Spots are $50 a person and proceeds will benefit the Nome Youth Peace Corps Club.
Finally, on Saturday the long-awaited Fireman’s Carnival is back. Raffle tickets have been on sale for over a month now and prizes include a snowmachine, Alaska Air and Bering Air round trip tickets, heating fuel, and local shopping sprees. The prize drawing will take place at the Nome Recreation Center at midnight Saturday night following a night of food, bingo, and games. Dinner starts at 5 p.m.
