KNOM Radio Mission has entered into an agreement with the Nome Chamber of Commerce to live stream Nome City Council meetings. The live streams will be available on KNOM’s Facebook and YouTube pages starting on August 12.
The partnership was born out of a desire to increase accessibility and accountability for citizens of Nome with their local government.
The live stream will feature modern capabilities such as the ability to show multiple camera angles of the meeting as well as documents at the same time. High-quality audio will be available with the arrival of new equipment purchased through the partnership beginning on August 26.
KNOM’s News Director Ben Townsend shared his thoughts on the partnership.
“This partnership fits right into our vision for elevating the standard for coverage of western Alaska,” Townsend explained. “This is the type of coverage the people of Nome, the people of this region deserve. I’m grateful to the Nome Chamber of Commerce for getting this started.”

Through the partnership, Nome Chamber of Commerce members will have the opportunity to showcase their businesses with custom, 200-character tickers that scroll at the bottom of the screen.
KNOM Radio will be expanding online, live stream coverage this fall with further opportunities for sponsors available. Townsend shared his thoughts on the future of KNOM’s live stream capabilities.
“We’ve set out on a mission to meet our audience where they are, which typically is on their phones and especially in this region on Facebook. We want to give our audience high quality content how they want it, and when they want it,” Townsend said.
Live stream replays will be available on KNOM’s Facebook, YouTube, and website as soon as the meetings conclude. For inquiries on advertising opportunities, please email news@knom.org.
