A new garbage truck for Nome has experienced mechanical issues, preventing its arrival on the first barge of 2024 as expected. The delayed shipment was also set to include new commercial dumpsters and residential trash bins.
According to Ron Stevens, Operations Manager for Alaska Waste, Nome won’t need to wait much longer. He confirmed the delay in a text message, attributing it to special accommodations needed for the new garbage truck and bins. Stevens now expects the shipment to arrive by barge at the beginning of August.
A string of late-season snow storms this past winter caused damage to numerous trash bins. Some residents also found their bins destroyed by plowing equipment after the storms. Delayed service also led many community members to take to Facebook to air out their frustration.
In response, Stevens visited Nome in April to meet with representatives from the Nome Joint Utility System and the City of Nome to brainstorm solutions. The most pressing issue was replacing broken trash bins, followed by improved communication when inclement weather causes delays.
Nome-based waste management employees shared that they are particularly eager for the arrival of the new garbage truck. They hope it will help improve service to Nome’s Alaska Waste customers.
