Port Commission Meets to Pass Tariff, Address Hot Work

The Nome Port Commission meets tonight for its regular meeting to address the third draft of the 2016 tariff and changes to hot work permits.

The Commission has held two work sessions so far this year, debating whether to raise rates or attempt to increase the port’s revenue. The commission has yet to come to a consensus.

Another issue still on the table is the regulation of what’s known as hot work. Hot work in and around the harbor mostly consists of welding and grinding. Up until now, the port has required a hot work permit, an agreement to follow best safe practices.

At its last work session, the commission debated whether to require a second person on site assigned to ‘fire watch’ when any hot work takes place.

The commission will debate the issue as well as hear reports from the City Manager, Harbormaster, and Port Director tonight at 5:30 pm.
