KNOM Exchange: Nome’s Mayoral Debate

The Mayoral Debate on KNOM Exchange has ended. The show featured incumbent Denise Michels, who is seeking reelection, and longtime Nome resident Richard Beneville, who is also seeking the office.

On the show we heard from Sue in Nome, asking about the city’s housing challenges; from Tim in Nome, who asked about the Norton Sound Economic Development Corporation’s board elections that run concurrently with local (including City of Nome) elections; Austin in Nome, who asked about the Nome port and the “marginalization” of Alaska Natives in the city; Roger in White Mountain, who asked about homelessness; Gene in Nome, whose statement could not be heard, possibly due to a poor phone connection; Leah in Nome, who asked about mayors or other elected officials living within the city limits; Marilyn in Nome, who asked about Arctic policy; and Bill in Nome, who asked about “foreign nationals” working in Nome.

Both candidates ended the show urging residents in Nome, and around the region, to participate in their local elections on Tuesday, Oct. 6.

On Thursday, Oct. 1, call in to ask your questions to the two candidates who want to be Mayor of Nome.

Incumbent Denise Michels is running for reelection, and longtime Nome resident Richard Beneville is challenging her for the mayor’s two-year seat.

On Thursday, KNOM Exchange is hosting a live debate between Nome’s mayoral candidates, giving listeners in the community—and across the region—a chance to call in and ask about the issues that impact Nome and the entirety of western Alaska.

  • What are your priorities for Nome’s mayor?
  • What priorities do you want to see for the City of Nome, now and into the future?
  • How should Nome’s proposed port expansion move forward?
  • How can Nome be a “good neighbor” in the Bering Strait and Norton Sound region, and how do you think the Mayor of Nome can shape that role?
  • What other issues—from substance abuse, to business development, to education, and beyond—do you want to ask the future Mayor of Nome?

Call in with questions, and make your voice heard, on Thursday, Oct. 1, at 10 a.m. on KNOM Exchange.
