Story49: Lew Tobin and the Tales of Charlie Moon

During the last weeks of August, Story49 is featuring two individuals who have collected and preserved local histories.

The first is Lew Tobin. After moving to Nome from New York in the 1970’s, Lew hung around with the old miners in town. Although often on the outskirts as “The Kid”, he listened intently to the banter and stories of the gold rush days. Soon, he began writing down the tales he heard and compiled them under the title “The Last Gold Mine of Nome: The Stories of Charlie Moon Talking About the Moldy, Old Gold of Nome”.

“There was no jukebox or TVs, they were the entertainment,” Lew says. “And I stayed and really enjoyed it. It’s like being part of history where you’re watching the people who lived it talk about it.”

Tune in to hear Lew’s personal story as well as excerpts from his compilation of tales.

This segment will air on KNOM Sunday, August 16th at 6:30p.m. and again on Thursday, August 20th at 3p.m. Or you can listen above!
