Johnson Keeps Seat on BSSD Board of Education; Meanwhile, Richard Defeats Barr

After elections last week, the Bering Strait School District’s board of education will feature several familiar faces — and one new one.

Sherman Richard of Wales defeated incumbent Reggie Barr of Brevig Mission for Section II, Seat C, according to district superintendent Bobby Bolen. Richard will serve the school board on behalf of Brevig Mission, Teller, Wales, and White Mountain.

Aurora Johnson of Unalakleet retained her spot despite opposition from Annabelle Cunningham of Unalakleet, who competed as a write-in candidate.

Johnson is the board’s chair, and she’ll continue to represent Unalakleet, St. Michael, and Stebbins from Section IV, Seat H.

Two more board seats were on last week’s ballot, but both of those candidates ran unopposed.

That means board treasurer Irene Navarro of Golovin will keep her seat, serving Elim, Golovin, Koyuk, and Shaktoolik.

Charlotte “Jane” Kava of Savoonga was also re-elected after running unopposed. She’s the board’s second vice-chair and will continue to serve on behalf of Diomede, Gambell, and Savoonga.

All four seats come with three-year terms. The board’s next meeting is Nov. 4 in Anchorage.
