NOME, Alaska — Team Alaska extended its lead in the medal race at the Arctic Winter Games on Wednesday, earning more than sixty medals during the third day of international competition in Nuuk, Greenland.
Leading all nine national teams, Alaska now has 108 medals in total. That’s 50 more than Team Yukon, which is still in second place ahead of Team Alberta North.
Several athletes from Western Alaska won awards at the halfway point of the tournament.
Nick Hanson of Unalakleet took gold in Open Men’s Two-Foot High Kick. Hanson never missed the ball, beating more than 20 opponents with a height of 7 feet, 11.5 inches. Hanson’s teammate — Makiyan Jay Ivanoff of Unalakleet — earned the silver medal with a kick that registered 7 feet, 9 inches.
Ivanoff also earned a silver medal in Open Men’s Alaskan High Kick. His second-place height was 7 feet, 4 inches.
Nome’s Madison Johnson took silver in Juvenile Women’s Dene Hand Games.
Bianca Trowbridge of Nome earned the bronze medal in Junior Women’s Biathlon Ski. She finished the six-kilometer sprint in 27 minutes, 28 seconds to claim second place.
