Nome Public Schools Finalizes Budget at $15.2 Million

NOME, Alaska — Nome Public Schools has finalized its budget for the next fiscal year. At a regular meeting Tuesday night, the Board of Education reviewed the fifth version of the school district’s $15.2 million financial plan and offered no revisions.

The board has scheduled a special session next week to approve and adopt the final budget.

However, state lawmakers are still debating public education funding as they work to close Alaska’s $4 billion budget gap. If they don’t reach an agreement by the end of the legislative session on Sunday, Nome Superintendent Shawn Arnold said the district may have to adopt its budget and make amendments later.

The school board has already trimmed $90,000 since the last version of the budget. They made cuts to supply, travel, and textbook costs. The school board will meet April 19 to adopt the budget for fiscal year 2017.
