Nome, AK — After initial counts in the Nome Municipal Election on Tuesday, it appears Jerald Brown will retain his seat on the Nome City Council. Brown ran unopposed for Seat “E”, receiving 388 of the 427 votes.
Mark Johnson took 224 votes out of the 467 cast for Seat “F” on the City Council. That’s 47.97% of the vote. But Nome City Manager Tom Moran says since none of the candidates received 50 percent of the vote plus one, a run-off election will still be required in November between Mark Johnson and Matt Culley, who received the 2nd highest amount of votes at 132.
Barbara Amorak will remain on the Nome School Board, after getting 88.5% of the vote.
On the Nome Joint Utility Board, Wesley Perkins received more than 75% of the vote for Seat “B.”
For Seat “D,” Chuck Wheeler took 206 votes, compared with 166 Write-ins. But Nome City Clerk, Bryant Hammond, declared Tuesday night that a challenge to Wheeler’s candidacy qualifications came in on Monday. That challenge regarding his residency in Nome has yet to be settled by the City Council.
And Proposition Number 1, which would allow the city to increase sales tax from five to seven percent during the summer season, received majority approval, totaling 299 votes, while 191 voted “No”.
Nome City Manager Tom Moran, City Clerk Bryant Hammond, and Deputy City Clerk Jill Nederhood finished tallying the unofficial results close to 9 p.m. on Tuesday night.
The Nome City Council has yet to finalize the numbers. The Council will meet at 12 o’clock noon on Thursday, October 6th for a special session to canvass the unofficial results from this municipal election.
