As a part of the “Summer of Heroes” program, Alaska Communications is encouraging nominations for this year’s (2017) scholarship recipients.
Started in 2011, Alaska Communications is on the lookout for extraordinary youth from across the state. Since its inception, five Alaskans each year have received scholarship money in recognition for making noteworthy contributions to their community.
The five winners this summer will receive a $1,500 scholarship, in addition to a trip to Anchorage, where the winners will be honored with a ceremony at the Alaska State Fair.
One lucky Summer of Heroes Scholarship recipient will receive the honor of being on next year’s logo. Tatiana Ticknor, featured on the 2016 logo, was a panelist next to President Obama at the White House’s Tribal Nations Conference, in addition to winning the scholarship last year (2016).
To bring heroes like Ticknor this opportunity, Alaska Communications has teamed up with the Boys and Girls Club of Alaska. “We love to team up with the Boys and Girls Club because they are a huge part of why our youth are taken care of in Alaska,” says Alaska Communications Corporate Communications Manager Hannah Blankenship. The company will also donate $25 to the non-profit for every smartphone sold between May 23rd and June 23rd up to $15,000.
Scholarship recipients are not required to be affiliated with the club to win the award. Eligible participants will be between 6 and 18 years old.
The deadline to recommend someone for the award is July 17th.
