BSSD Art in Juneau

“Alaska’s Heart Through Student Art” featured artwork from four students in the Bering Strait School District. In late March, these creative representations of life and culture in Western Alaska were displayed in Juneau.

High school senior Lindsay Sinnok from Shishmaref contributed handmade, beaded maklaks (footwear), an homage to traditional, Inupiaq skin-sewing. Fifth-grader Tyler Milligrock of Little Diomede submitted a hand-etched ulu (traditional knife used for cutting fish). Gambell high school freshman Jeremy Koozaata contributed an ink drawing depicting three Yup’ik masks from his home region, St. Lawrence Island. Savoonga 11th-grader Jevon Annogiyuk showcased his painting of a personified whale in the sea.

You’ll find images of all these artworks in a story right here on knom.org.
