Before the snow sets in for winter, the City of Nome is removing buildings that may be public health or fire hazards. The City Council started by approving four buildings for abatement by resolution during a special session Tuesday night.
One property on the original abatement list included a city-owned property, 209 Prospect Place.
Interim City Manager John Handeland expressed that it would be better for the city to consider selling the property than abating it saying, “I personally believe this has some value and would advocate that it not be put up for abatement.”
However, the Council was in a work session and could not take action on Handeland’s proposal.
After reviewing eleven properties and allowing their owners to discuss each one with the Council in a work session, the Council decided to put up 305 East King Place for abatement rather than 209 Prospect Place.
The other properties approved for abatement are: 209 West 2nd Avenue, 211 West 1st Ave, and 110 West 4th Ave.
Those property owners have until November first to remedy their buildings or have them be demolished by the city.
