Nanook Volleyball Season Ends at Western Conference, Nome Placed Third Overall

The Nome Nanook Volleyball team went to Kotzebue over the weekend for the Western Conference Volleyball Tournament. Based on their finish at the tournament, this year’s volleyball season could be over for the Nanooks.

The top two teams from the Western Conference tourney, Barrow and Kotzebue, qualified for the Class 3A State Tournament. Nome finished third and won’t be going to State’s this year.

Even though they were not in the top two, Nome volleyball coach Veronica Alviso says that she is proud of the Nanooks team.

“We did leave the tournament incredibly proud though because our girls received the academic championship award, so we had an overall GPA of 3.721.”

And from the weekend’s tournament, there were a pair of individual standouts as well.

With the season seeming to be at its end, the Nanooks finished with a record of 10-17, and third in the Western conference behind Barrow and Kotzebue, in first and second respectively.

Despite injuries throughout the year, especially to the consistent all-tournament setter Clara Hansen, Alviso had a positive summary of the Nanooks’ season.

“This season has been a wonderful experience for both myself, as it was my first year coaching, but also for our athletes. Like I’ve stated throughout the season, it’s been a very young team.”

Alviso went on to say that she is excited for the Nome volleyball team to return next season with a more experienced roster.
